Description:
The course studies the development of African American novel from its
beginning up to the present day. Students are also acquainted with the
development of African American literature from "slave narratives" to protest novels, modernism, postmodernism as well as female writing and cultural studies. The course presents the shift in the perception of African American literature from marginal to accepted and theorized. The eight selected novels that are dealt with during the course show specific changes and various aspects of African American writing as well as different perceptions of African American literature during several centuries.
