Department of Croatian Language and Literature

General information about the programme

The Croatian Language and Literature Department constituted the core of the newly founded University of Split's Department of Humanities in 2001, which subsequently expanded into the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2005. A great number of students have since completed the Croatian language and literature programme with one of two specializations (teaching and cultural module) at the Master's level.

Present experience in the implementation of the Humanities programme in Split has revealed its social, academic and cultural justifiability and a great interest of high school students who choose to continue their studies at our Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Our study programme is based on relevant and current research. Course content and modes of course implementation are designed to foster students' engagement, and increase their critical analysis and creativity.

The Croatian Language and Literature programme consists of both a three-year undergraduate programme and a two-year graduate programme. They cover all the foundational knowledge in the fields of linguistics and literature, enabling the students to improve their competencies and develop new ones in the fields of Croatian Language and Literature.

Upon the completion of their undergraduate study, the Bachelor of Arts in Croatian Language and Literature is employable in cultural and administrative institutions, the publishing, media and tourism industries, as well as junior research positions in projects and professions where expertise in Croatian language, literature and culture is necessary. The Croatian Language and Literature undergraduate programme is comparable to other similar programmes in the Republic of Croatia, allowing for student mobility between universities in Croatia and abroad. The Bachelor of Arts in Croatian Language and Literature can enroll in the graduate level Croatian Language and Literature study programme at the University of Split and in similar study programmes at other Croatian universities. Upon the completion of the undergraduate Croatian Language and Literature study programme, the student is awarded the following academic title: Bachelor of Arts, BA in Croatian Language and Literature.

The Graduate study programme of Croatian Language and Literature further develops the students’ knowledge in the area of linguistic and literature. Our graduates specializing in education at the Masters level can find work as teachers of Croatian language and literature in numerous elementary and high schools, while graduates with an emphasis on cultural studies are highly employable in various cultural and social institutions. The Croatian Language and Literature study programme is offered as a double major thus providing the student with a broader education and equipping him/her with the skills necessary for work in education, culture and the media industry. After the successful completion of graduate studies the Master of Arts in Croatian Language and Literature will be able to continue doctoral studies in other related disciplines at universities in Croatia and abroad.

Upon the completion of the graduate Croatian Language and Literature study programme the student is awarded the following academic title: Master of Arts, MA in Croatian Language and Literature.
