Department of Philosophy

General information about the programme

The idea of initiating Philosophy studies has been present since the implementation of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split. The humanities represent a foundation for many university studies and competent experts in the field of philosophy are needed in various branches of economics, media, education and other areas of modern society.

The programme is structured to gradually and systematically introduce the student to the fundamental principles of the discipline and to make him/her familiar with the historical development of one of the oldest sciences and to improve his/her critical analytical abilities and insights into the main philosophical issues by studying relevant philosophical sources or participating in scientific disputes.

The current need for interdisciplinary studies and for team work in the solution of social and environmental problems has led to the introduction of this study programme. The study of philosophy has been conceived as a constitutive element in the development of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split, and at the same time, due to its critical approach to recent research insights, it has been envisaged as complementary methodological-scientific support to interdisciplinary research.

The study programme is based on modern concepts of syllabus design in philosophy which includes major achievements in this discipline together with recent research insights. The programme has been created in accordance with Bologna declaration principles and employs modern teaching methods and technologies which can be applied to critical analyses of new theories in other related disciplines and experimental sciences.

Since this programme has been created according to Bologna principles it is comparable to programmes of related studies in Croatia and other European universities.

The Study of Philosophy organized at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is divided into two cycles - the undergraduate degree programme and the graduate study programme.

The undergraduate degree programme at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split, has been created to educate and train professionals in the field of philosophy up to a level necessary for the continuation of graduate studies in philosophy and other related disciplines.
